What to Do After Selling Your Car in Ireland

Payment and handover finish the transaction, but a few account and record checks still matter. Work through this list once the buyer has taken the car.

Keep proof of payment and ownership transfer

Save the purchase receipt and the ownership-transfer confirmation. When selling to a motor dealer, the Department of Transport’s process differs from a private sale; follow the dealer-transfer documents and keep copies of what was completed.

Give Me The Reg confirms payment before handover, completes the dealer ownership transfer through Motortrans and emails the relevant records. You can use the Department of Transport service to check the transfer status.

Contact your insurer and toll provider

Tell your insurer that you no longer own the car and ask it to amend or cancel the policy as appropriate. Do not assume the policy has ended simply because the keys have changed hands.

Remove the registration from toll accounts and take the physical tag from the windscreen. eFlow advises customers who have sold a vehicle to remove it through Manage Vehicles, Tags and Tolling.

Remove your data without disrupting the handover

Take personal belongings, saved home addresses, paired phones and garage-door information. For a connected car or EV, follow the manufacturer’s process for removing the vehicle from your account after the buyer has confirmed what is needed for transfer.

Keep service records relevant to the car with the vehicle, but remove unrelated receipts or documents containing personal information. Retain your own copies of the sale and settlement records.
